Lakeside badis for swimming in the lake- Utoquai is one of the oldest and most historic. Also in that area is Café Odeon which is beautiful and famous for its previous visitors including Einstein, Lenin, James Joyce, and more.
Café Schober is a fun stop as well since it is the oldest cafe in Zurich and the interior is so unique. They also have a classic dry goods store across the small square which is fun to pop into and if you buy anything, it’s all by weight. Nearby is the apartment Lenin lived in (Leninwohnung) right before he went back and started the Russian revolution so that’s an interesting stop for history buffs (address: Spiegelgasse 14).
Hiltl, the oldest, continuously run vegetarian restaurant is also a delicious stop near the main train station for people interested in that cuisine.
You mentioned the zoo, if people are in that area there is also a beautiful cemetery in that area where James Joyce is buried.
It’s also fun to ride the cogwheel from Zentrum and visit the university terrasse (listed above as Polyterrasse). There is a very beautiful view of the city from there.
Lastly, near the city centre is the historic Lindonhof park where you can also get a stunning view of the Fraumunster church and the Limmat (river).
